Eat Right, Smile Bright
The Lincoln Lancaster County Health Department’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program is a supplemental nutrition program for pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children up to 5 years of age.
WIC can help families in many ways other than providing healthy foods! We help connect families to other resources they may need like: health care providers, dentists, Medicaid, SNAP, and much more. One way that LLCHD WIC is helping connect our Lincoln families is by collaborating with health department’s dental program. This collaboration with the LLCHD Dental Program allows WIC to have a dental hygienist offer a fluoride application to all WIC participants and their families every Tuesday at our health department location. This fluoride varnish application program has helped approximately 80 families find a dental home where they are able to receive routine and preventative dental care. The fluoride varnish application program is just one way that WIC is helping our families “Eat Right and Smile Bright.”
Fun Facts about our WIC and Dental Services Collaboration:
In 2017 alone we have provided:
- 625 children with a fluoride application
- 562 adults with a fluoride application

WIC is the nation’s most successful and cost-effective public health nutrition program. It is a short term program designed to influence lifetime nutrition and health behaviors of low to moderate income mothers, infants and children. LLCHD WIC is strengthening families by providing 4 core services: healthy foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support and referrals to health and social services.
